Who and What is Messiah (Mashiach)?

Messiah is the English-language version of the Hebrew word Mashiach, which means "anointed." Israel's kings were anointed with oil - a special anointing oil was poured on their heads - and so were prophets and priests. The prophet Samuel who anointed both Saul as King of Israel and later David, is an example. So is Moses' anointment of Aaron as the high priest (the cohen gadol) of Israel. Later, Mashiach took on the meaning of the future king of Israel, a direct descendant of King David, who would usher in the final redemption of the world.
